The Veins of Life  Watershed Society

The Veins of Life Watershed Society is educating local students about non-point source pollution through the Storm Drain Marking Program. The Storm Drain Marking Program, created by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the BC Ministry of Environment, and the BC Conservation Foundation, provides an opportunity for younger students (grade two to grade six) to play an active role in water stewardship.

Students take a closer look at their neighbourhood storm drain system:

WHERE DOES THE STORM WATER GO?
WHAT ARE THE COMPONENTS OF A STORM DRAIN SYSTEM?
HOW DO OUR ACTIVITIES AFFECT THE QUALITY OF OUR WATER?
WHAT IS NON POINT SOURCE POLLUTION?
WHAT CAN WE DO TO HELP?

The Storm Drain Marking program includes looking at maps of local storm drain systems, painting yellow fish beside storm drains, and delivering brochures to homes on the street where storm drains are marked.

This program is complimentary to the general presentation on watershed stewardship offered under “Book a Presentation” web page.  It is recommended that the Storm Drain Marking program follow the presentation.  The components may be delivered together or booked at different times.
