Veins of Life Watershed Society

Stream Team Member

-Conducted a SHIM survey of Craigflower Creek and its tributaries.

-Collected and identified native plant samples for herbarium.

-Produced a web site about the VOLWS Stream Team and its projects, including identification pages for native plants and wildlife.

May - August 1999

University of Victoria (sponsored by the National Science and Engineering Research Council)

Researcher

-Conducted a research project to describe the spatial distribution of epiphytic organisms on the eelgrass beds in Patricia Bay, on the Saanich Inlet.

-This demanding ecological study was designed to include diving to collect samples, exact identification of collected organisms and statistical analysis of the data.

-This research was used for my Biology Honours degree, which required a rigorous thesis to be written as well as an oral defense of my conclusions.

January - August 1997

Fisheries Branch, Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks, Victoria

Fisheries Information Summary System (F.I.S.S.) Assistant

-Worked as part of a team responsible for collecting, compiling and distributing information important to Fisheries on all streams and rivers of British Columbia.

-Edited F.I.S.S. data in the ORACLE database and on the hardcopy F.I.S.S. forms and maps; high level of accuracy expected and maintained throughout term

-Completely responsible for supervision and training of new Co-op students; placed in charge of F.I.S.S. unit while supervisor was on leave (approximately 1˝ months)

Forest Renewal B.C. (through the Royal British Columbia Museum), Victoria

Herbarium Collections Assistant

-Quickly and accurately entered plant specimen data collected by the Museum’s curators into a database

-Mounted the Herbarium specimens observing all appropriate protocols and filed them taxonomically in the collection

-Conducted a comprehensive intertidal transect survey of Spring Bay. Paper entitled "Critical Tide Factors and Biological Interactions Influencing Stratification of Organisms in Spring Bay."

-Studied influences on benthic invertebrate populations of Craigflower Creek in Thetis Lake Park. Paper entitled "Environmental Factors Affecting Benthic Macroinvertebrate Populations of Craigflower Creek."

-P.A.D.I Open Water SCUBA diving certification (with over 30 dives)
