M3 DAILY SUMMARY:
Tuesday, June 26th - Responding to marine
mammal sighting information provided to the M3 project, we departed
for the westside of San Juan Island, WA. There we joined other whalewatching
vessels and killer whales from K-pod. An elephant seal and a minke
whale were also seen in the area. Daily, the M3 vessel is tasked
with observing the whalewatching activities of all vessels, offering
pleasure boaters information regarding the animals they are watching
and tips for viewing to minimize potential disturbances to the animals
normal life processes. We often share these duties with The Friday
Harbor Whale Museum Soundwatch Boater Education Program and coordinate
our efforts on the water.
Wednesday, June 27th - A crew of 3 headed
out to monitor whalewatching activities in Haro Strait / San Juan
Island. Killer whales from J and K pods, as well as some minke whales
were the focus of the day. Later that evening some of us traveled
to Vancouver to attend the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Center
opening of the new "Wild Coast" exhibit. The VAMSC is a partner
organization in the M3 project.
Thursday, June 28th - After attending
a meeting at Environment Canada, we returned to Victoria and our
office to catch up on various tasks and continue planning for upcoming
events.
Saturday, June 30th - On the first day
of the Canada long-weekend, the M3 vessel held a strong presence
on the waters of southern Vancouver Island. We had the opportunity
to speak with several private boaters about the animals they were
watching and advise them of appropriate viewing conduct. Killer
whales and Dall's porpoise were seen throughout the day. M3 and
Soundwatch divided efforts between two groups of whales and vessels.
Sunday July 1st - Canada Day. Killer whales
were travelling along the westside of San Juan Island, US. Given
the considerable boating activity this weekend, in both Canadian
and US waters, M3 and Soundwatch again divided duties among the
boaters.
