M3 DAILY SUMMARY:
Tuesday, July 3rd - A DFO Fisheries Officer
gave us a wonderful session on fisheries policy, public relations
tips, and incident reporting requirements. The session was very
informative and clarified several issues for M3 operations. The
afternoon was spent compiling data gathered over the last week and
general project paperwork and planning.
Wednesday, July 4th - The US Independence
Day proved to be a busy boating day. Collaborating with Soundwatch,
M3 monitored boating and whale activities. Unfortunately, circumstances
required that the crew return to the office for the afternoon to
plan for our display for the Gorge Gala event.
Thursday, July 5th - Benefiting from the
experiences of a former whalewatching driver/naturalist accompanying
us on board, our duties took us to Smith Island, southern Lopez
Island, and back to southern San Juan Island. The killer whales
were spread out over a few miles in all directions, making monitoring
of vessels challenging.
Friday, July 6th - The M3 logo was placed
on the boat today, when the vessel was pulled out of the water for
it's regularly scheduled cleaning and maintenance inspection. Plans
continued in the development of an international brochure of local
marine mammal issues and viewing guidelines. In addition, plans
were finalized for the Gorge Gala on Saturday.
