M3 DAILY SUMMARY:
Wed, August 1, 2001 Started the day with
an interview with Carla Wilson from the Times Columnist at the Oak
Bay Marina. Everything ran smoothly and photos were taken of the
M3 vessel, project manager, project coordinator and crew. The article
ran in the TC on Friday, August 3, 2001. Later, an interview with
Miles Crossen from the San Juan Island Sounder. Article yet to be
printed. The remainder of the day was spent on the water monitoring
boats viewing minke whales off Salmon Bank while the killer whales
were reported off the west coast of Vancouver Island.
Thursday, August 2, 2001 An unsuccessful
attempt to locate a reported transient killer whale off Victoria
lead us to J, K and L pod of resident killer whales off Sooke. A
lot of vessels were present, including numerous recreational fishing
boats and other boats transiting at high speed through the area
with little acknowledgment of whale presence. Visibility was considerably
poor with dense fog in the area. M3 made contact with as many vessels
as possible to advise of guidelines and offer suggestions for viewing.
Friday, August 3, 2001 A very foggy morning
off the Oak Bay waterfront made travel to San Juan Island less than
desirable. Making the best of the situation, the crew caught up
on data entry of observations from the past week and fielded phone
calls regarding the newspaper coverage of M3 project.
