M3 DAILY SUMMARY:

Tuesday, August 7, 2001 The first batch of brochures was delivered to the M3 office. Some amendments to contract documents and scheduling were attended to. Following a review session for Marine VHF radio operations, the Marine VHF Radio Operator's Certificate exam was administered by the Project Coordinator. We extend our thanks to the kind help of an Oak Bay Sea Rescue (Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary Unit 33) qualified radio examiner for agreeing to mark the exams and apply for the licenses for each successful crewmember.

Wednesday, August 8, 2001 Sadly leaving one crewmember behind in the office to complete some essential documentation, the M3 crew headed out to San Juan Island where the majority of the pleasure boats were located. We distributed more than 30 of the new international brochures and received much interest and enthusiasm for the design and content. A transient whale was travelling inbound from Sooke and later reports said the whale was seen feeding on a porpoise. The leg oil was changed from both outboards at days end. A slideshow social event for whalewatching industry took place at Sweetwaters Nightclub, put on by photographer Gary Woodward of Cuda Marine. The images were breathtaking and a good time was had by all.

Thursday, August 9, 2001 A special day on the water - the San Juan County Deputy Sheriff was on the water monitoring the whalewatching activities with the help of Kari Koski from Soundwatch. Acting as back up to M3, the sheriff's vessel "Tonka" approached boaters who were of particular concern or who had failed to heed M3 advise for viewing. It was a wonderful trial combining outreach and enforcement capabilities together.

Friday, August 10, 2001 After resolving a little trouble with the starboard engine, M3 was off the San Juan to pick up Kari Koski from Soundwatch for a ride-along. The Soundwatch vessel has been down for a week now, awaiting parts for engine repairs. Our project collaboration continues even when only one vessel can be on scene. Traveled with L12 sub pod from Turn Point to East Point. A considerable number of pleasure boats were in the area, and we found ourselves extremely busy throughout the entire day. J, K, and the rest of L pod met up with us off East Point as M3 had to return to base.
