WEIRS

Weirs are barriers that are built across the river and divert fish into a trap. They work the best to capture migratory fish as they move either up or down stream. The weir can be a temporary or permanent structure.

Weirs can be used to gather data on the amount of sexually mature adults, age structure, sex ratio, spawning escapement, or the condition of the fish. They are usually set up in small streams, because they are expensive to produce, and tend to become clogged with debris and ice. If the nets become clogged, they can tear or collapse.
