MINNOW TRAPS
Minnow or gee-minnow traps are net or wire enclosures used to trap live fish. They are very size selective and can only be used for juvenile fish or adults of small species. The fish swim in through a funnel shaped opening and are led from a large opening to a narrow opening close to the center of the trap. Once inside, it is hard for the fish to locate the opening again. They are used in deep water or areas with many snags. |

The trap is composed of two wire baskets held together with a clip attached to a marker float. The trap is 40 cm long, with a diameter of 23 cm at the middle, and 19 cm at the end. The baskets interlock and are held together by clips. A float line is attached and the trap is set on the bottom or suspended at a specific depth. The float line should have the name of the owner of the trap, so it can be returned if lost. The trap can be set with or without bait. Some types of bait are oatmeal, preserved fish roe, cat food, sardines, canned fish, corn, shrimp, and cheese. The bait can be either suspended in the trap or set on the bottom of it.
The traps should be set in weeds, beach area, under over hanging vegetation, or amongst submerged logs. The traps must be recovered because they fish indefinitely. If the trap is not recovered, predation occurs among the captured fish. To reduce this problem, place small rocks in the trap, which will provide refuge for the smaller fish.
