POLE SEINE

A pole seine is fairly short and easy to maneuver in streams and small back channels. It works well in areas with small substrate, and limited obstructions. The seine consists of a pole attached to either side of a net. On the bottom of the net is a lead line, to prevent fish from escaping under the net. Along the top of the net is a cork line to help it float. There is a bag in the net, which captures the fish. One person stands at each end of the net and works it through the sample area, usually in a downstream manner.

Some other types of seines are beach, purse, and lampara. Beach seines are used in shallow water. One person holds the net on shore while another walks through the water, herding the fish together. Purse and lampara seines are used in open water or over smooth bottoms. The bottom edge is drawn together to trap the fish.
